Kierra Smith pockets Women’s 200m breaststroke gold – Junior Pan Pacific Championships
Kierra Smith of Canada pocketed gold medal of the Women’s 200m breaststroke on day four of the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, August 26.
Smith showed no leniency to her challengers in the distant breaststroke discipline as she earned her way to the finishing blockade for gold medal. With her unrelenting efforts, she maintained her position in the final round and reached the podium for crown
of the event.
Smith, who posted a top fastest time in the qualification round of the event, continued her alarming pace in the final round and snared gold medal of the event by producing a time of 2 minutes and 25.78 seconds.
Smith’s gruelling effort was comfortably under the previous meet record of 2 minutes and 26.47 seconds, made by Rebecca Kemp of Australia in 2010.
The gold medallist faced tough competition from her team-member, Mariya Chekanovych in the four-lap event but managed to prove her supremacy for gold medal of the event.
Chekanovych stayed just 0.18 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and made her way to the finishing wall for silver medal by submitting an effort of 2 minutes and 25.96 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Annie Zhu of USA, who stayed 0.69 seconds slower from her former finisher and reached the podium for bronze medal by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 26.65 seconds.
Zhu was chased by Satori Hosokoshi of Japan, who stayed almost half a body length slower from reaching the podium and settled on the wall as fourth position holder by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 27.19 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Reona Aoki of Japan, who stayed 0.81 seconds behind and completed her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 28.00 seconds.
Subsequently, Aoki was chased by Anne Lazor of USA, who stayed 0.36 seconds slower and touched the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 28.36 seconds.
Smith received massive admiration from the crowd for her laudable efforts and collected her accolade at the medal distribution ceremony of the event.
