Kiki Bertens enjoys her breakthrough season – Tennis Season
Dutch starlet, Kiki Bertens, enjoyed a successful season this year. She captured her maiden WTA career title this year in Fes and reached her career best rank of 57 at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings.
The Dutch youngster started her 2012 campaign standing at number 180 in the WTA Premier Rankings. She picked up her game at the Irapuato ITF where she captured the title. Bertens upset the fourth seed, Yaroslava Shvedova from Kazakhstan, in the final showdown
to lift the title.
She maintained her intensity and secured a quarter-final showing at the Poza Rica ITF event where she exited to seventh seed Jana Cepelova. However, the Dutch unleashed her skills again at the Bath ITF event in Great Britain. She rallied past her rivals
and after overpowering fourth seeded Annika Beck in the title-round, Bertens grabbed her second ITF title of the season.
The 20-year-old went berserk at the Grand Prix De SAR La Princessse Lalla Marya in Fes. She triumphed over her opponents at the qualifying competition to secure a main draw spot at this WTA International level tournament.
In just her second main draw appearance, Bertens unleashed flurry of winner from her box of tricks and cruised to the title-round. She crushed Spain’s Laura Pous-Tio with a bagel in 78 minutes and grabbed her first WTA title.
The blooming Dutch commented in a post match press conference, "In the beginning I was very nervous and she started well, but after I won the first set all my nerves were gone. I love it here. I was here for one week because I played the qualies too, so
I'm a little bit tired now, but I'm going to celebrate tonight and then go back home tomorrow. I'm excited. I'm going to play more tournaments now and try to win more."
Mustering her performance further, the Dutch stunned sixth seeded Chanelle Scheepers and fifth seeded Simona Halep en route to the final round.
With this epic victory, Bertens cracked the Top 100 and gained confidence boost.
Her impressive run did not end there as the Dutchwomen secured a main draw spot through qualifier for the French Open and reached second round at the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open. She also made a quarter-final showing at the Hansol Korea Open
in Seoul and the season standing at number 63 in the WTA Premier Rankings.
