Kiki Bertens shocks Urszula Radwanska to secure a place in round two – Fes WTA 2012
Dutch qualifier, Kiki Bertens, trashed the Polish challenger, Urszula Radwanska, in straight sets at the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem 2012 on Tuesday. She jolted down a 6-4, 7-5 success against the 21-year-old to power into the second round
at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament held in Fes.
Bertens displayed brilliant skills to outclass the German-born in their first outing. As a result, the Dutch not only edged in the head-to-head series against Radwanska but also advanced into the round of 16 at the Royal Tennis Club de Fes.
Ranked 149th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Bertens made a strong entry at this clay court event and drew the first blood in the opening game to put her nose ahead. Despite losing her edge in the very next game, she utilised another break chance
to her advantage and eventually jumped to a 3-1 lead. The Dutch maintained consistency in her game after that and clicked the opener with a 6-4 win.
The Dutch rising star kept momentum running into the following set and quickly leaped at 4-0 with two breaks of serve. She lost her serve in the sixth game but broke Radwanska’s serve again to extend her lead at 5-2. Despite losing her next three games,
Bertens capitalised on fourth break chance in the 11th game to seal the set by winning seven games to five.
Bertens formulated a lower first serve share of 70 per cent as opposed to the Pole’s 81 per cent but acceptably marked 25 out of 50 points on it. She cashed in half of the 12 break opportunities and blocked five out of nine breakpoints she faced to conquer
the match.
The 20-year-old will next confront sixth seeded Chanelle Scheepers who tumbled over Anastasia Rodionova in straight sets to occupy this spot.
The third seed, Petra Cetkovska, will join Bertens in the follow-up round. The Czech blasted away all four breakpoints she faced and capitalised on all three break chances to outclass the Hungarian qualifier, Melinda Czink, with a 6-4, 6-2 score line. She
also hammered four aces and finished the deal with 58 points to earn the spotlight.
