Kiki Bertens slaughters Vania King to enter round two – KDB Korea Open 2012
Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens trounced the American challenger, Vania King, with a breadstick at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012 on Monday. She jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 victory against the 23-year-old to charge into the second round at this WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) International event held in Seoul, South Korea.
The Dutch contender, Bertens stomped over King through brilliant agility at this outdoor hard court event. After earning the glory in 63 minutes, the youngster inched closer towards her second year-to-date title and took a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head series
against King.
Bertens thundered into the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center. She drew the first blood in the opening game and leaped to a 2-0 lead. Despite failing to block the lone breakpoint she faced in the fourth game, the Dutch capitalised on another break chance in
the very next game to get the upper hand once again. After the American held her serve in the fifth game, the Dutch bagged the last two games and clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 63rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Bertens went out of control in the following set. After King plucked her opening serve, the Dutch fired powerful forehands to reel off six games in a row. She warded off the only
breakpoint she came across and cashed in both break chances to pull out the set with a breadstick.
The 20-year-old showed her best tennis throughout the battle. She smashed six aces and regardless of producing a lower first serve share, Bertens brilliantly clicked 21 out of 25 points on it to prevail.
Bertens will face off the Spanish challenger, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, who made an epic comeback to triumph over fifth seed Julia Goerges in a three-set thriller to set up this meeting. The Spaniard lost her serve five times but capitalised on five out of
nine break chances to formulate a 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 victory. She took full advantage of seven double faults the seed spilled and ended the match with 89 points. Soler-Espinosa produced a slightly lower first serve share but acceptably clinched 35 out of 50
points on it.
