Kiki Bertens upsets Chanelle Scheepers to reach final eight – Fes WTA 2012
Dutch qualifier, Kiki Bertens, stunned the sixth seed, Chanelle Scheepers, in a three set nail-biter at the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem 2012 on Wednesday. She joggled up a 7- 5, 1-6, 6-3 victory against the world
number 43 to power into the quarter-finals at this Moroccan clay court event taking place from 23rd to 29th April.
The underdog capitalised fully on the 18 double faults and several unforced errors Scheepers committed, consequently sealing the deal in two hours and 14 minutes at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International level tournament
held on dirt. As a result, Bertens not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the South African number one but also booked a spot in the last eight.
Bertens stormed into the Royal Tennis Club de Fes and drew the first blood in the second game to leap to a 3-0 lead. Despite losing her following two serves and trailing at 3-4, she recovered in the eighth game to tie the scores
at 4-4. The Dutch then exchanged a serve break and consequently sealed the opener with a 7-5 success after getting the breakthrough in the last game.
The 28-year-old on the other hand made a spectacular reply in the second set. She earned the desiderated break in the opening game and regardless of losing her edge in the very next game, Scheepers went on a five-game killing spree
to pull out the equaliser with a breadstick.
The match could have gone in any direction but the Dutch youngster was the one who sought her early momentum. She suffered the first blow in the second game and went 0-2 down. However, Bertens unleashed her skills and wiped out
the following four games in a row before the South African could hold on. She maintained consistency in her game and after capitalising on another break chance in the last game, the Dutch clicked the decider with a 6-3 win.
149th ranked Bertens will next confront her fellow qualifier, Garbine Muguruza Blanco of Spain. The enthusiastic Spaniard registered a 6-4 retirement victory over Austria’s Patricia Mayr-Achleitner to set-up this duel.
