Kiki Bertens upsets Lucie Safarova in the opening clash – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Kiki Bertens of Netherlands posted an upset against the 19th seed Czech starlet, Lucie Safarova, to commence her Wimbledon campaign in London. She bagged the win in straight sets 6-3, 6-0; rounding off the clash in just
50 minutes.
It was an embarrassing ending to the Czech star who promised to perform a lot better in the year’s third Grand Slam Championship. The opening set witnessed an early breakpoint for the Dutch who built on the initial lead to get
the upper hand in the contest. The scores were pushed to 3-0 at the start and an exchange of breakpoints further pushed the scores to 4-1.
It was looking pretty ominous for the Czech who was in no position to counter the onslaught of her competitor. She tried to bounce back in the contest but couldn’t take advantage of the three allotted breakpoints in the remaining
phase of the opening set. Bertens converted all three of her breakpoints to clinch the first set in just 31 minutes into play.
Safarova is a fighter and was expected to fight back in the following set. However the tables were turned upon her with two early aces from the Dutch starlet who pushed on to pile a lead of 3-0 at the start. She clasped another
breakthrough and made it 4-0.
The Czech was pushing hard to bounce back in the contest but wasn’t provided with any opportunity at all. The Dutch youngster clinched another breakthrough in the final game of the second set and registered a bagel against Safarova.
The second set was completely in just 19 minutes featuring 10 unforced errors from the 19th seed Czech compared to just two of her rival. Both players smashed five winners but Bertens won 24 points out of 34 played to round off the encounter in
grand fashion.
Next up for the Dutch upset queen is the winner of the match between the French Open quarter-finalist, Yaroslava Shvedova, and the South African star, Chanelle Scheepers. The first round contest between Shvedova and Scheepers will
be an exciting battle and everyone expects a similar performance from the Kazakh wildcard entrant as she did in the previous Grand Slam Championship in Paris.
