Killdeer ......?

Question

hi, when and where do Killdeer have eggs and start breathing?

I'm looking to take a picture of them but cant if i dunno where they are, thank you. And dont worry about me disturbing the eggs or Killdeer, i know how to keep my distance without disturbing them, thank you.

killdeer often inhabit grassy areas with sufficient moisture they breed in early summer late spring and lay their eggs a week or so later. They nest in rocky outcroppings or rock beds where their eggs are camouflaged.

"Although technically shorebirds, Killdeer are often found away from shores as well as near them, frequenting mudflats, gravel bars, short-grass meadows, and their twentieth-century counterparts, such as construction sites, road shoulders, gravel roads and driveways, graveled rooftops, lawns, pastures, and golf courses. In this area they can be found on nesting on railroad track gravel as well.  Unfortunately there has been a decline of killdeer in this area also.  I think it is from over mowing and over use of herbicides.

They have already been breeding..most have chicks by now.  You might still find a few late starters..but by the end of July/early August most will probably be done.  They do not really build a nest..but more of a "scrape" usually in rocky, or gravelly areas.

I've seen them build nests on the ground in rocks and my husband has seen them on rooftops that have gravel.  See the link below for more info.  They sure are nasty when protecting their nests!
