Question:

Killing of nerves in the shin ?

I read somewhere that muay thai and some karate fighters deaden/kill of the nerves in their shins so they can kick harder and feel less pain. I train in Karate and i sometimes see my sensei rolling a pin or a bar up and down his shin ( his legs are like a f***king baseball bat) . What are the dangers of doing this, nerves arent really there for nothing else except for feeling pain. What can happen if you do this, will you get arthiritis in your legs or something, and btw please dont say its bad because it kills nerves? If you can add some info or links to studies or something. Thanks

  1. Unless you plan on kicking things for the rest of your movable life I would suggest you steer clear of damaging (yes it's damaging) any part of your body.

  2. no they dont kill nerves. what they do is build up pain tolerance and callouses on the striking areas

  3. you should just practice by kicking a heavy bag or kicking shield or thai pads. that is good way of conditioning your shins. also do some kind of resistance training for your legs like squats so it makes your shin bones much more stronger and tougher. that is basically all you need. i would not want to practice by kick trees or anything really hard. i ice my shins every time i even bump them on something.

  4. Doin that can damage your knees if you do it realy hard but if your goind to try it dont use the rolling pin yet because its hard and will hurt start of roundhouse kicking something soft and then when you do it start rolling like a glass bottle or a rolling pin on your legs it does work because it makes it more sensitive and will hurt less.
