Guerrilla Games had a lot to live up to following the success of Killzone 2 as they released the third installment of the PlayStation 3 exclusive.
The console wars are fought on many levels ranging from pricing to online service, yet in the end it always boils down to one thing and that is the list of games that are exclusive to one console.
Halo, Metal Gear Solid, Fable, Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, Gears of War, LittleBigPlanet and Heavy Rain are just a few of the titles that are exclusive to one console or the other and when it comes to first-person shooters on the PlayStation 3 there
is only one title that comes to mind and that is Killzone 3.
The original Killzone was released on the PlayStation 2 console and one could really tell that Guerrilla Games were pushing the console to its very limit. Killzone 2 wowed the audience at E3 when the PlayStation 3 was announced and did so again when an in-game
footage trailer was run a year later.
The series became the premier shooter on the PlayStation 3 when it was released and was even awarded the best online multiplayer game by GameSpot.com.
So one can tell that similar to Dead Space 2, Killzone 3 had a lot to live up to. Luckily for Sony and Guerrilla Games the trailers hit the mark in terms of creating a buzz among gamers as the visuals looked nothing short of stunning and the amount of features
in the game had people rather excited.
Killzone 3 supported full stereoscopic 3D support, a feature that Sony showed off at their E3 conference to the crowd’s delight, and also supported the PlayStation Move and Sharpshooter which added an extra layer to the gameplay.
The online component of the game received a few changes as the gameplay became smoother and faster as opposed to Killzone 2’s distinctive gritty feel. It made the game more accessible to a larger audience, yet the fact that players could change it to the
original setting meant that the core fans of the series were left satisfied as well.
In fact, Killzone 3 was a much more polished, much more immersive Killzone 2 and while the storyline left a lot to be desired, the multiplayer, gameplay, visuals and atmosphere more than made up for it.
There were many set pieces and on rail sections that many gamers could play time and time again and the enemy types were more varied and provided a greater challenge than in the last game. Killzone 3 also provided plenty of memorable moments such as a multi-levelled
boss fight that had players attacking a giant mech from the ground before taking to the air in the hopes of finishing it off.
New weapons were introduced and a few classics also made a return, yet the most satisfying way to ‘send an enemy solider on his way’ was through the newly implemented brutal melee mechanic that Guerrilla games implemented in the game.
It lived up to its name and allowed players to stab the enemy in the eye and snap their necks among other things, and not just in the single player campaign either, but in online multiplayer as well.
