Killzone 3’s best single-player campaign moments – Part 2
The hype surrounding Guerrilla Games’ inter-planetary first person shooter, Killzone 3, was phenomenal. The game had a lot to live up to in its multiplayer component as its predecessor, Killzone 2, had one of the best multiplayer action to hit consoles in
ages.
Killzone 3 also had plenty of room for improvement when it came to its single player and although the game did have quite a few o****m and ‘wet pant’ inducing moments, it did not come together as a whole package, which ultimately let it down.
That being said, the ‘moments’ mentioned were an experience of their own and it is those moments that this article, and the next few articles will be reminiscing.
After reliving ‘the opening’ (tutorial mission) and ‘Nuketown’ (the second chapter of the game officially known as Evacuation Orders) it is now time to move on to other equally thrilling moments.
The Shooter
Ever since the sniper rifle has been introduced in video games it has gone on to become the weapon of choice for many. Every game has its own version of the one-shot-one-kill weapon of death, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare recreating present day weapons
such as the Barrett .50 Cal and Resistance 2 allowing players to slow down time while looking through the scope, Killzone on the other hand seems to have found a sweet spot with the StA-52SLAR Sniper Rifle.
It makes taking down a foe with a single shot a joy, and the satisfaction one gets with a headshot is unmatchable. So it only seems logical that Guerrilla Games decided to put in an entire section dedicated to the weapon.
As the ISA forces are attempting to evacuate the city (and the planet) Sev and Rico are ordered to take out a couple of Arc Towers (Helghat’s version of Anti-Aircraft guns). Taking up position at a rooftop, the player has a clear line of sight at a seemingly
endless stream of Helghast soldiers he can pick off one by one.
The shooting is so satisfying that players can just sit there shooting away for as long as they want, and the conveniently placed ammo box right next to the player means that he, or she, will never run out of bullets.
Apart from killing wave upon wave of Helghast, the player must also take down enemy soldiers at mounted machine gun emplacements, as well as a number of annoying enemy snipers as well. What makes them annoying is the fact that they too have the one-shot-one-kill
sniper rifle and has the player playing a constant game of cat and mouse.
While the sniping section is immensely satisfying, it is short-lived and is the only time in the entire game players will get to enjoy using the weapon as it becomes sparse as the game wears on.
A Hole
While not a gameplay per-se, the next moment gave every fan of the Killzone series a moment they could savour. After having their EXOs destroyed by the MAWLR, Sev and Rico share a bit of banter, during which Sev says what every Killzone fan has been thinking
and wanting to say since Killzone 2.
‘Yeah, well i’m not an a*****e.’
This put a smile on everyone’s face as Rico is the most hated character in the Killzone series, which is odd seeing how he one of the good guys.
