Killzone 3’s best single-player campaign moments
Video games of today have a lot to live up to and not just in terms of gameplay, but rather in providing gamers a complete and fulfilling experience. The story line, visuals, art direction, gameplay, feel of the game, content, support; the list goes on and
on. In fact, it takes just as much, if not more effort, to make a video game than it does a quality Hollywood movie.
One game, which may not have been perfect, but had plenty of memorable moments, was Guerrilla Games’ PlayStation 3 exclusive, Killzone 3. The follow up to the stellar Killzone 2, Killzone 3 put players in the shoes of Sevchenko, the protagonist from the
second game, as he and the rest of the ISA tried their best to avoid being captured by the Helghast army, after their invasion of the planet had gone sour.
While the storyline was an improvement from the second game, it still left plenty wanting more, but that is not to say it did not have a few mind blowing moments.
The opening
It has become a norm in the gaming world for the first level of almost every game to be an easy tutorial mission, where players get to grips with the controls of the game. While Killzone may have followed the game format, it did it in a way that made the
best use of the game’s own world: by putting players in the shoes of the iconic Helghast.
It is no secret that the antagonist army, the Helghast, are more popular than the protagonist ISA forces in the game. Gamers wanted to know what it would be like playing as the Helghast and the brief introduction level not only set up the game’s storyline,
but also gave everyone a brief glimpse into the world of the Helghast.
The First Person view was, to put it in layman’s terms, cool, and one could feel the tension of the characters as they tried to avoid too much attention and hoped their disguises could get them to their objective. The prospect of getting caught seemed like
a real danger and such an atmosphere really helped take the stage above the usual tutorial missions.
Nuketown
Near the end of Killzone 2, the Helghast leader Scolar Visari destroys his own capital city by blowing it up with a nuclear explosion. The aftermath of which can be seen in the early missions of Killzone 3.
The city looks just like it should, as a battered and beaten wasteland, but the visuals and attention to detail make the destruction look so rich and immersive that it adds to the combat in the game.
The feeling of desperation that steadily grows as players look to catch up with the convoy, their only hope to get off the planet, becomes apparent as everyone seems to be pushing each other in an effort to outrun, or breakthrough, the Helghast.
While the level design of the city in Killzone 2 was more industrial and almost bland to some extent, Killzone 3 made it that much richer, adding museums and at one point something that looks a bit like a zoo, though gamers will know that Helghan does not
have much wildlife apart from a few overgrown bugs.
