Kim Clijsters, Petra Kvitova pull out of the 2011 Mercury Insurance Open – Tennis News
On Saturday the 23rd of July, 2011, tournament officials of the Mercury Insurance Open disclosed that the Belgian Kim Clijsters and the Czech Petra Kvitova will not be participating in the Mercury Insurance Open 2011.
Both the top players withdrew from the championship because of an ankle recovery (Kim Clijsters) and a pulled abdominal muscle (Petra Kvitova).
The two-time defending US Open champion and reigning Australian Open titlist Kim Clijsters incurred a right ankle injury earlier this season, at the UNICEF Open in’s-Hertogenbosch, just a week before Wimbledon. Due to the same
injury she was unable to play at the third Grand Slam (Wimbledon) event of the year and is now recovering to come back for the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of 2011, that is the US Open.
The world number seven, Kvitova suffered a leg injury in her inner thigh, while playing Tsvetana Pironkova during the quarterfinal at Wimbledon this year. She was scheduled to make her first appearance after the third Grand Slam
event at the La Costa Resort and Spa, however, was unable to do so as she was also recovering in time for the US Open.
Unable to make her appearance; she said regretting, “I am sorry I am unable to play in the Mercury Insurance Open this year but I’m still recovering from an injury that happened at Wimbledon,” Kvitova said. “Best wishes for a great
tournament and I hope to be in Carlsbad next year.”
With the two not playing many fans felt disappointed, however the tournament director Raquel Giscafre reassured the fans and had indicated that the player field would see some very famous names such as Vera Zvonareva, defending
champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, Maria Kirilenko, Flavia Pennetta of Italy, Daniela Hantuchova, Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia and many more. Additionally, the fans will also get to see Andrea Petkovic, Julia Goerges and Sabine
Lisicki, Germany’s top three female professional tennis stars.
The Mercury Insurance Open is a Premier 700 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) event that is played on outdoor hard courts and offers a prize money that amounts to USD 721,000/- It features a fifty six player singles draw and sixteen
doubles team draw. This is the second time the tournament is being played since they left in 2007. In 2010 the women’s professional tennis event returned to the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, USA.
