Kim Clijsters is back in business – Tennis Special
Former world number one, Kim Clijsters, is back on course with two straight wins in the UNICEF Open to make into the last eight of the tournament. The latest victim for her was Kateryna Bondarenko, who terminated the French Open
finalist, Sara Errani, in the opening round. So, it has been a terrific comeback so far for the Belgian superstar who missed the bulk of this season due to niggling injuries.
On Tuesday, the Belgian tennis ace proved to the world that she can still devastate her competitors despite staying out of action for a long time. She outmuscled her rival in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 within an hour; stamping her
authority at the grass courts of Eastbourne.
Clijsters has dropped to world number 53 to date. However, she is safe for the participation in the upcoming London Olympics. She was the world number one in February last year but couldn’t hold on to her spot due to iterative
injuries.
After her triumph against Bondarenko, she confessed, “The match with Bondarenko was a lot better than my first match of the week. After the draw I knew that it was very important to get through the first round and then I would
start to feel more confident on the grass." It has been a good start for her. She was looking to make a mark before the commencement of year’s third Grand Slam Championship at Wimbledon.
Clijsters has only contested in three tournaments so far, including the Brisbane International, the Australian Open and the Sony Ericsson Open. She was the semi-finalist in the season opener at Brisbane; was forced to pull out
of the contest due to an injury against the Slovak tennis ace, Daniela Hantuchova. She was playing emphatically well in the year’s first Grand Slam Championship at Melbourne and reached the semi-finals of the tournament. Her victims list included the players
like 20th seed Slovak, Daniela Hantuchova, the top seed from Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki and the former French Open Champion, Li Na. However, her efforts against the reining Australian Open Champion, Victoria Azarenka, were not good enough to earn
her a spot in the grand finale of the tournament. She lost the match in three sets.
After dismissing the Aussie, Jarmila Gajdosova and the 14th seed German beauty queen, Julia Goerges; Clijsters lost to her compatriot, Yanina Wickmayer, in the third round at Miami. That was her last action before another
injury layoff. However, her comeback is very bright and there is no doubt that she looks in stunning form. She is definitely a class player and one of the strongest contenders to threaten the fourth ranked Czech, Petra Kvitova, in her title defence at Wimbledon.
It will be entertaining to witness the Belgian back in form and crushing her opponent at the age of 29. Usually women lose a lot of stamina when they get above the age of 26. However, some superstars like Serena Williams, Venus
Williams and Kim Clijsters never give up their routine aggression and always fight hard until the end. There is a strong possibility that Clijsters can stun the world by claiming yet another Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.
