Kim Clijsters ousts Ana Ivanovic at 2011 Sony Ericsson Open to qualify for quarterfinals
Current World Number 2 Kim Clijsters managed to oust Serbian tennis pro Ana Ivanovic in three difficult sets 7-6(4), 3-6, 7-6(5) in her fourth round match at this year’s Sony Ericsson Open, managing to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Miami event. The Belgian tennis pro took a little over an hour and fifteen minutes to defeat her opponent.
Ivanovic was seeded nineteenth at the Miami event, and gave World Number 2 Clijsters a run for her money in the fourth round of the tournament. The Serbian World Number 19 scored a total of five aces during the match, outdoing Clijsters and her single ace. She also committed less double faults, making just seven in comparison with eleven made by Clijsters. However, Clijsters managed to win 69 per cent of her points on the first serve, which helped her to perform well during the remainder of the match.
All in all, Kim Clijsters won the match with just three points more than her opponent. The Belgian tennis mama scored 51 per cent of a total of 261 points.
Ivanovic, who has won ten singles titles to date, took the loss very badly. She managed a smile during her interview, saying, “you should see my racket. I kind of broke [it] and then kind of cried a little bit, and then I was OK.”
Her disappointment is certainly not unwarranted, as the player did her best throughout the match. She says, “I really feel like I haven’t done much wrong. I had my opportunities and she played some really good tennis. I stayed with her and I created the opportunities for myself but I am just very disappointed to lose like that.”
With this win, Clijsters has brought their head-to-head score to 4-nil for herself. Their last meeting was at the 2010 US Open, where Clijsters defeated the Serb in straight sets in the round of the last 16.
Kim Clijsters will play against Belarusian tennis pro Victoria Azarenka in her quarterfinal match at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open.
