Kim Clijsters surprises Caroline Wozniacki at the Diamond Games
– Tennis News
A former world number one, Kim Clijsters of Belgium made an epic comeback after series of injuries and upset current world number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in straight sets on Thursday. She formulated a 6-2, 7-6 victory
over the 21-year-old Dane at the Diamond Games, a WTA Exhibition event taking place on the indoor hard courts in Antwerp, Belgium.
Currently standing at number thirteen, Clijsters re-created her 2003 magic and shocked Wozniacki at her home soil on their third meeting. She not only maintained her winning record after returning to tennis from a long injury break
but also proved everyone that she still has what it takes to become number one again.
28-year-old Belgian stormed into the Belgian courts and after breaking the Dane’s serve twice, she clinched the opener with a 6-2 win. She dusted away all breakpoints faced and capitalised on two out of many breakpoint opportunities
to her advantage.
Clijsters kept momentum rolling into the final set and held her opening serve convincingly. Later, she capitalised on her breakpoint chances but squandered her lead in the proceeding game, eventually dragging the set to a tie-breaker.
The Belgian uplifted her game in it and sealed the set with a 7-6 score line.
The high spirited Belgian had a tremendous start of the season as she made a final showdown at Sydney WTA Premier event (lost to eight seeded Chinese Li Na). She then cruised her way in the Australian Open and grabbed the Grand
Slam for the fourth time here (She defeated Li in the title-round). Her winning run continued for the next five matches in which she defeated United States in the Fed Cup and made a final berth at Paris.
“After such a long recovery and so much training effort, it is fun to be playing an ‘official’ match,” Clijsters said.
“The start of 2011 was really good,” she reflected. “But after that I made some decisions I no longer would make now.
“Now, I’ll be listening to my body much better.”
Current mother and the 2011 Australian Open winner, Clijsters is still improving at this age.
The blooming Belgian further stated, “I have been working really hard at my service, because that often did not go well in the past year. And there are a few other details I would like to see improve still.”
She is eyeing for a better 2012 season and after earning this victory, she is all geared up to reach the top of tennis world again.
