Kim Clijsters withdraws from China Open
US Open champion Kim Clijsters has confirmed she won’t be playing at the China Open in Beijing next week due to a foot injury.
The Belgian has announced on her website that: "I am very sorry to have to cancel for Beijing.
“After I returned from New York, I had some moles removed. The operation had been planned for quite a while. However, the wound on my foot sole heals really bad. Therefore playing tennis is not possible."
Clijsters’ withdrawal from the WTA Premier event follows world No. 1 Serena Williams’ announcement that she’ll miss Beijing as she continues her protracted recovery from the cut foot she sustained soon after winning Wimbledon at the start of July.
Williams has not played a tournament since her straight sets win over Vera Zvonareva in the final at Wimbledon, while this would have been Clijsters’ first appearance after defending her US Open title earlier in September.
Since reigniting her tennis career last summer, Clijsters has played a limited number of tournaments as she balances her professional commitments with motherhood, to two -year-old daughter Jada.
The China Open was to be the world No. 5’s only tournament between winning the US Open and the WTA Championships in Doha at the end of October, which is now her next scheduled competitive event.
