Kim Clijsters withdraws from US Open 2011 – Tennis News
The former world number 1 Kim Clijsters announced her withdrawal from the fourth grand slam event of the year; US Open 2011. The event will take place from the 29th of August to the 14th of September at the
all time famous; USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing Medows, Queens, New York.
Following her announcement, she gave a written statement on her website that stated, 'I am now focussing on 2012, on the Olympics. Who knows? This time I might make it through without injuries and feel up for a last US Open. The
most important thing right now is that I should make a full recovery, so I will also drop the rest of the season. I'll pick up training slowly and carefully and prepare for 2012, but without a specific time frame or pressure. I had two tournaments to go this
autumn, but they are not worth the risk. I would not be able to get enough points to compete in the WTA Championship anyway.'
Nevertheless, Clijsters is loved by the American fans and has played the US Open from 1999 to 2010 excluding in 2004, 06, 07 and 2008 and won the title 3 times. The first time she won the title was in 2005 and after that a back-to-back
win 2009 and 2010. The 2009 US Open saw her competing against Serena Williams in the semi final and then she contested with Caroline Wozniacki to an enroute victory in the final. In 2010 she defeated Venus Williams in the semi final and then saw a clash against
Vera Zvonareva in the final, which she triumphed. The Belgian has played a total of 42 matches in the US Open out of which she has won an ostentatious 37 matches and lost only in 5 during her entire career here.
In 2011, 28 year-old Clijsters was in her groove and with a great start was a finalist on hard courts of Sydney, where she lost to the Chinese, Li Na in straight sets but then went on to win her fourth singles grand slam title
at the Australian Open by avenging her loss against Li Na. This year she has played a total of 30 matches, out of which she has won a grand 23 matches and was defeated in only 7.
Holder of 41 WTA titles, Clijsters had reached her career high ranking of world number one on the 11th of August 2003. Out of the 624 matches that she has played; she has won a flamboyant 503 only losing 121 matches.
The  has had an amazing professional career and has also won four grand slam singles title, along with, 2 doubles grand slam titles.
