Kim noses ahead at China Open

Do-hoon Kim finished the second round of the Volvo China Open one stroke in front on 11-under after carding four birdies at Suzhou Jinji Lake Golf Club earlier today.

Kim could have improved on that standing if not for a bogey at the last, when he missed a putt for par on the 18th. Nonetheless, the Korean will be satisfied with his showing just a week after his first victory on his home tour, when he won the SBS Tomato Open.

Yesterday's joint leader Thongchai Jaidee dropped into second place on 10-under, tying with Welshman Jamie Donaldson and Korea's YE Yang. Jaidee was two under the day after carding two bogeys, while Donaldson finished four-under on the day, 10-under in total after producing two bogeys but also six birdies. Yang dropped just one shot on the 3rd, as he stockpiled seven birdies to stay within a stroke of the leader Kim.

Corey Pavin was in more mercurial form today, six birdies - including five on the back nine - countered somewhat by four bogeys. The US Ryder Cup captain remains in touch with the top players though, four shots behind Kim on seven-under.

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, this year's European Ryder Cup captain, had a more consistent day, coming home four-under-par today  - and four-under for the  contest, after he could only make par yesterday. During today's round, Monty shot five birdies, with just one blemish coming midway through the round (the Scot starting play on the 10th hole) when he bogied the 18th.

Montgomerie is now tied for 22nd place, just behind the English duo of Graeme Storm and Oliver Fisher, who are tied for 11th place on six-under, and another English pair, Ross McGowan and Mark Foster on five-under.

Last year's champion, Australian Scott Strange, failed to make the cut after coming home at level par today; Strange failed to make up the lost ground conceded yesterday, when shooting four-over.
