Kimi Räikkönen hints Formula One career may be over
Kimi Räikkönen has indicated that his Formula One career may be over.
The Finnish driver won the world championship for the first time for Ferrari back in 2007 and has revealed a return to Formula One is unlikely.
“You never know but I will probably never return to Formula One,” he said speaking to French sports daily newspaper L’Equipe.
The 30-year old is currently competing in rallying, driving for Citroën Junior Team. He won 18 grands prix in Formula One and left the sport after leaving a year early from his Ferrari contract. He had hoped to secure a race seat at McLaren, his former team, for the 2010 season, but when this didn’t happen he decided to switch sports.
“It's something I did for many years. I had many great moments. I won a world championship title, which is what I always wanted, but times have changed. Now I'm in rallying and there are many other things apart from Formula One in life,” he said.
Räikkönen went on to say that he would like to try driving in the Le Mans 24-Hour race one day.
“I would like to try but you need to find the right team. If you want to win, there are only two, Peugeot and Audi. One day, I hope, there will be an opportunity,” he said.
Renault are believed to want Räikkönen for next season in Formula One to partner Robert Kubica, but it looks likely that the Finn will stay in rallying for at least another year.
