Kimi Raikkonen: Michael Schumacher was not so lucky – Formula 1 news
Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen says that he has made a good comeback in F1 as compared to Michael Schumacher of Mercedes AMG because of a more competent car.
Schumacher returned to F1 two years ago with Mercedes after he took his retirement back in 2006. The seven-time world champion struggled during the first year of his comeback and was completely outperformed by his teammate, Nico Rosberg.
Nevertheless, the veteran German driver performed quite well during the preceding year with his best performance in Canadian Grand Prix in which he finished fourth.
However, Raikkonen’s comeback has been quite impressive as he has secured an incredible seventh place finish in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia even after starting from 17th place in the grid.
Moreover, in the second race held at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia he finished at fifth position.
It will be important to mention that Raikkonen is currently at seventh position in the drivers’ championship following the defending champion, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing while he attribute his incredible performance to his competitive car E20.
“It's just about whether you have a good car or not,” Raikkonen told Sport Bild. “It has made life much easier for me. He (Schumacher) was not so lucky. The (Lotus) car is good. Whether it's good enough for victory or not, I don't know. At least we are not
far away from the top.”
The Finnish driver spent his last two years in World Rally Championship and expressed that there has been no dramatic change in F1 while he said that he is just the same person he used to be.
“I'm still the same person as I was before,” he said.
Furthermore, he said that they are working really hard to make the necessary developments and the significant preparations for the season ahead. He also said that he is focused, relaxed and determined for the upcoming races.
“I feel comfortable here which helps me to focus on racing; I guess that's why people seem to think I'm a different person, but I'm just as focused and motivated as before,” said Raikkonen.
