Kimi Raikkonen believes he is still very much in contention for the title race – Formula 1 news
Kimi Raikkonen has said that he cannot afford to lose more ground to his rivals in the title race of the season.
The Finn says that he is still very much in contention for the title and is looking to work hard to improve even further once the season resumes from the summer break.
Raikkonen has had a very good comeback to the sport which he left in 2009. He has been able to secure five podiums so far and is looking good to claim a Grand Prix victory as well. The Finn has been lucky to have E20 Lotus at his avail as the car is very
reliable and has some good potential.
The Lotus driver will be heading to the next weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix with some confidence as he has been very successful at the venue previously. He has won four races at Spa and the win will surely put in a very good position in the standings and for
the title hunt.
He has not ruled himself out from the title race but admits that he has very little room to wiggle as he cannot afford to lose more ground because of the high competition on show in the season.
“I am now fifth in the championship and obviously aiming at getting more points than the guys in front of me,” he said on Friday. “The smaller the gap to the leaders is, the better for me and for the team. Every race from here on is very important. The whole
team is pushing 100 per cent and we need to beat our rivals and take more points than they do every time.”
Talking about his chance Raikkonen was his usual confident self and said, “I've been in the business long enough that I don't really worry about things too much. We've been improving our position in the championships - both for myself and for the team -
so as long as we keep doing that hopefully the win will come.”
It will be interesting to see how the Finn fares at Spa next weekend.
