Kimi Raikkonen claimed victory a little too late – Formula 1
Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen has finally claimed his first victory in the 2012 Formula 1 season in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix held at Yas Marina Circuit last weekend but it is little too late for him now as he is no more in the title fight.
At present, he is standing at third place in the drivers’ championship with 198 points. Additionally, he is ahead of Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and is behind Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
Even though, he has performed terrifically well in the season so far and has been considered as a potential candidate for the championship title. However, the current leader in the drivers’ championship, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull has a lead of 57 points
over the Finnish driver and it is impossible for him to win the title now as there are only two races left.
Nevertheless, he has expressed that he is really happy for his team after scoring his first win of the current season. Furthermore, he admired all the efforts of his team in the season until now.
Besides, after winning the preceding race, he said that he has successfully proved his point to the critics. He also said that although they didn’t have the most competent car in the field, but they have still performed inspiringly well in the season until
now.
“To be honest it's just another win on the list for me,” the Lotus driver said of his Abu Dhabi triumph. “It's great of course, because it's been a few years, but wins prior to this one were very similar; we didn't have best car, but we fought and still
won. It's great to win now, so people will stop asking me if I can win or not, and at least it makes it a bit clearer!”
In addition, he said that he is very much pleased with his performance in the season so far and is feeling very much delighted for his team. Moreover, he said that he is confidently looking forward to perform well in the remaining two races of the current
season.
“I'll just do my thing, and if I'm happy with what I'm doing and it's the best it can be for team, then that's that,” he said.
It will be important to mention that the Finn could have achieved victory earlier this season, but the Enstone based team has struggled with its qualifying pace due to which he has not been able to secure higher grid slots and failed to win any race before
the Abu Dhabi GP.
Nonetheless, the team principal, Eric Boullier has said that they are making the necessary developments in their car so as to come up stronger in the next two races. He also said that their main focus is to improve their qualifying pace in order to help
their drivers in securing competitive grid positions for the last two races to attain good results.
The British squad has recently confirmed the race seat of the 2007 world champion for the coming year. Moreover, they are making the essential preparations to come up even stronger in next season.
The 33-year-old has got some extraordinary driving skills and it will be exciting to see how he performs in the last two grands prix of the current season and whether he claims the championship title in the next year or not.
