Kimi Raikkonen eying Michael Schumacher’s consecutive points finishes record – Formula 1 news
Kimi Raikkonen is eying to break one of Michael Schumacher’s many records by finishing 25 successive races in points.
The latter of the two drivers set this record by scoring points in 24 consecutive events between 2001 and 2003 with Ferrari. Those were the times, when he simply dominated the rest of the field and ended up breaking almost every record in the books.
However, Raikkonen is not far away from beating this record and he seems pretty happy about it. He said, “Of course it would be nice. It’s already nice now and every time with this team. In the past I kept retiring quite often so it’s different for sure
to what it was in the past. But I’m sure that we will have some difficulties at some point.”
The Finn almost finished outside the points during the Monaco GP, as he had suffered a rear tyre puncture during the final moments of the race. When he came out on track, he was way behind in 16th place and it seemed impossible for him to make up places
from there.
Despite that, the 2007 world champion did not lose hope and continued positing some quick laps. He was on fresher tyres, so managed to overtake the other cars easily. Still, it appeared that he would be unable to score any points in the race until Williams’
driver Valtteri Bottas moved out of the way to give him an outside chance.
Luckily for Raikkonen, Nico Hulkenberg was struggling in his Sauber because of tyre degradation. This allowed the former of the two to finish in 10th place overall, which meant that he was still in the hunt to break Schumacher’s record.
The Iceman will now be hoping to score some solid points in Canada, but he says that the situation there can be quite uncertain.
He added, “The weather can change a lot, sometimes the tyres or the track aren’t working very well, sometimes there are a lot of safety cars, or sometimes another driver runs into the back of you when you’re waiting at a red light.”
Raikkonen would not only want to score a few points, but he would like to finish on the podium in Montreal. Otherwise, he might fall further back in the Drivers’ Championship.
