Kimi Raikkonen says he can contend for the 2012 drivers’ title – Formula 1 news
Kimi Raikkonen has said that he has not ruled out himself for the drivers’ championship of the 2012 Formula 1 season.
As Formula 1 moves into the second half of the season the competitiveness have left drivers and teams still unclear about their eventual standings the gap between teams and drivers is not wide enough to label any one team or driver to be the favourite for
the titles.
Raikkonen feels that he still has a good chance to fight for the championship title such has been the level of competitiveness in the season. After nine races have been completed in the season the Lotus driver sits at fifth in the standing, 46 behind the
leader Fernando Alonso.
Raikkonen admitted that he was not thinking of himself as being a strong contender for the title fight but at this stage assessing the situation of the season he feels he can contend for the title if he can maintain his performances consistently.
“I have no reason to say I wouldn't try,” said Raikkonen. “I'm not here just to drive around. But I have no idea if we're going to be up there in the end or not.”
“We're still not 100 per cent happy with how things have gone on all the weekends, but I would say that's what I was expecting. You don't think that everything will be perfect. It's still quite early days in the season and we are still up there,” he added.
Lotus have been the stand out team of the season as the team was not counted among the top teams prior to the season but Lotus have shown great promise with the car they introduced for 2012 and with the inclusion of a former champion in the form of Raikkonen
and a talented young driver in Romain Grosjean.
Raikkonen believes that the result could have been different for him at the British GP if he had not lost ground in the first lap.
It will be interesting to see how the Finn driver fares as the season progresses.
