Kimi Raikkonen still has many options - Steve Robertson
Kimi Raikkonen's management dismissed all the rumours suggesting the retirement of the driver. Some of the leading newspapers as well as websites reported earlier this week that the driver is set to hang up his helmet for the next season.
The stories caught wind after the sudden death of Raikkonen's father, Matti Raikkonen, last December, only two days before Christmas. Following his death, the co-driver of Kimi, Kaj Lindstrom said in an interview, "Since the death of Matti Raikkonen, all
the plans (of Kimi Raikkonen) are on ice."
The statement was misinterpreted by a large number of people assuming that the driver might be taking break for the next season or might say good-bye to the sport forever. However, the 31-year-old's manager, Steve Robertson dismissed all the rumours saying
that there are no plans of retirement in the near future and still the former Ferrari and McLaren driver has a long way to go.
Robertson further explained, "There is a lot of talk and of course he is upset about his father's death, which is normal. I'm pretty sure Kimi will still be involved in motor sport. Kimi is a world champion so of course he has many options. But at the moment,
there is nothing to say."
However, Robertson did not reveal if Raikkonen will be seen in rallying in the upcoming season or will return to Formula One once again. But he indicated that he will very soon come up with news for all the fans of the driver. "Well, it's January, so I don't
think it's going to be a very long time," Robertson proclaimed.
Kimi Raikkonen has driven with Formula One for nine seasons, making his debut in the series in 2001 with Sauber. After a year’s drive with the team, he was picked by McLaren in 2002 and stayed with the British squad until 2006, finishing two of the seasons
at 2nd place in the drivers’ standings.
However, the best season in the Finn’s career was 2007, when after a very dramatic fight for the title between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton all through the season, Raikkonen emerged to be the world champion only in the last race of the season. The
31-year–old drove for another two seasons with the red livery, but left Formula One at the start of the 2010. Although, there were rumours that he will return to the next season’s grid with Renault, but the team has given its drivers’ line up and no plans
of Raikkonen have been disclosed so far.
