Kimi Raikkonen thinks tyre management is crucial for 2012 Canadian GP – Formula 1 news
Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen has said that tyre management will play a crucial role in 2012 Canadian Grand Prix which is to be held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on June 10.
Raikkonen said that the track in Montreal is going to be very challenging for every contender with regard to the brake wear. He also said that it will be important to find the right setup for the race ahead while he said that he feels contended with this
year’s new generation Pirelli tyres.
“Montreal is a challenging circuit as grip level changes a lot over the course of a lap. There are different types of track surface, so you have to find a good setup and you need to be confident with how tyres work on all surfaces. We have seen quite a range
of weather conditions and temperatures in Canada over the years, and track and tyre temperature seems to be an interesting challenge this season. You need car to be good under braking, as you don’t want to get flat spots. This year’s Pirelli tyres are fine
for me,” he said.
The Finnish driver is presently standing at 6th place in the drivers’ championship with 51 points. Moreover, he is 6 points ahead of Jenson Button of McLaren and 8 points behind Nico Rosberg of Mercedes AMG.
He has performed quite convincingly in the season so far as he secured podium finishes in the fourth and fifth grands prix. However, he struggled with the setup of E20 in the last race in Monte Carlo where he secured 9th place finish after setting off from
8th grid position.
Nevertheless, he said that he is positively looking forward to perform well in the Canadian GP. In addition, he said that he has been working with the team’s engineer to rectify the issues which he faced during the sixth race.
Over and above, he said that they are trying their best to make the necessary advancements and the substantial preparations in order to improve the pace of their car for the forthcoming races so as to secure a competitive position in the championship.
