Kimiko Date-Krumm gets the better of Kristina Barrois in qualifying final – Cincinnati Open 2011
40-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm got the better of the 29-year-old Kristina Barrois in one hour and 38 minutes at the Lindsay Tennis Centre in Mason, Ohio. The Japanese (Krumm) won the match by a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory against the German
Barrois at the Cincinnati Open 2011 during the qualifying final round.
This was their first meeting and neither of the players knew the other’s skill or technique, however, with the help of experience the Japanese gained an upper hand. In addition, it was a close shave between both the players and
the set went into a tie breaker.
Krumm won 66% of her service points as she had a consistent performance in her first and second serve, while the German lost most of her service points due to a poor performance in the second serve as compared to the first and
hence, she was only able to bag 58% of her total service points.
The Japanese had improved her second return points which assisted her in achieving a 42% of her total return points, along with bagging a 50% of her break points and also saving 50%. Whilst, Barrois had consistently poor performance
in both her first and second return points and hence, was only able to bag a pitiable 34% of her total return points.
Therefore, the Japanese Krumm won the set with seven more points than the German Barrois and won the tie breaker with a 7-5 lead.
Amidst the second set Barrois had struck one extra double fault, hitting the net than her Japanese opponent and both the players had smashed 2 aces each.
Krumm had taken a notch higher on her serve which enabled her to win 12% more points in her first serve than the previous set and even though, she had mustered only 38% win in her second, she was still capable of winning an exceptional
69% in her total service points, while her German opponent was only able to attain 22 out of 37 points in her total service points, and therefore making it a 59% win.
The difference between the return points of both the players was 10% with Krumm attaining 41% and Barrois attaining 31% in their total return points.
Krumm won the set by restricting her opponent to only four games, and by winning one out of five break points against the 29-year-old who only managed to save and win none of her break points. She also managed a fifty four percent
win on her total service points.
