Kimiko Date-Krumm topples Gisela Dulko in the 1st round – Mercury Open 2011
On Tuesday, 2nd of August, The Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm won the first round of the Mercury Open 2011 from the Argentinean Gisela Dulko at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, California, in 1 hour, 22 minutes and
07 seconds 7-5, 6-0.
The two had met for the first time during this year at the Barcelona Ladies Open and had taken to the classic clay courts of the David Lloyd Club.  Gisela Dulko emerged victorious with a 7-5, 6-4 and was also leading the head to
head when finally  Krumm’s prayers were answered at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, California.
Krumm won the pitch and hit an ace and she aced once more during the set. However, in the next few moments her accuracy staggered and she struck 1 double fault that hit the net.  She had a consistent serve and return serve in both
the first and second points won which enable her to achieve 60% in her total serve points along with a 49% win in her total return points.  Although, she wasn’t able to save any either of the two break points she was capable of breaking her opponent 3 times.
Whereas, Dulko who was confident she would win this match and the set, performed poorly in her return. Although her serve was not that bad as she was able to achieve 51% in her total serve points, she lost most of her points as
she was unable to attain a good number of return points ( she had a below the average 40% of her total return points). Although, she was able to bag a 100% of her breakpoints, she was unable to save three out of the five break points and therefore lost the
set with 6 fewer points than Krumm’s .
Worn out from the first set, Dulko was powerless to make a comeback and her performance deteriorated when compared to the first set. In addition, she had lousy points in all her scores and was unable to capitalize on her break
points.
The crowd expected the 40-year-old (Krumm) to lose her stamina and not with the set but she surprised all by outperforming her 26-year-old opponent (Dulko).
Across the board during the second set; Krumm had won 76% of her total service points along with an exceptional return she was able to achieve 68% of her total return points. In addition, she managed to save 100% of her breakpoints
and was capable of breaking Dulko 3 times.
In spite of her age, Krumm had restricted her opponent to only two sets and equalized their head to head. She easily qualified into the second set where she will be facing the German Sabine Lisicki.
