Kimmer Coppejans breezes past Kyle Edmund into the last four – Boys’ Singles French Open 2012
Sixth seed Kimmer Coppejans of Belgium ousted Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the French Open in Paris on Thursday.
Coppejans and Edmund didn't allow each other to snatch a break in the first four games, levelling the score at 2-2. The Belgian struck in the fifth and held his next serve to go up 4-2. However, Edmund did not take much time to
come on equal terms, winning two in a row to square it off at 4-4. Coppejans hit another blow in the ninth and capitalised on it to win 6-4.
The Belgian contestant neither hit an ace nor committed any double fault in the opening set. He had a solid first serve percentage of 74 but managed to clinch just 19 of the 29 points on them. In comparison, Edmund put in just
43 percent of the first deliveries but incredibly converted 10 of the 13 of them into points. He hit one winner and made two unforced errors. The Brit failed to utilise one of the two break opportunities he created and could not put away two of the three threats
he came across.
In the second set, both players won their serve in the first six games to take the score to 3-3. Coppejans completely dominated the proceedings afterwards, as he captured three consecutive games and won it 6-3.
The Belgian served superbly in the second set, hitting 81 percent of the first serves and bagging 14 of the 17 points on them. Just like the previous set, he did not deliver any ace or double fault in the second. On the other hand,
Edmund fired a couple of aces and committed the same number of double faults. The British contender fared poorly on the second serves, losing seven of the 10 points on them. The right-hander was unable to create any break chance for himself and failed to save
two of the five threats he faced.
Coppejans will meet either Dutch player, Max De Vroome, or eighth seed, Mitchell Krueger of USA, in the semi-finals.
