Kind of weird, but has anyone done this?

Today I went to visit my cousin who had a baby almost 2 weeks ago. When I got there she was doing dishes, so I walked into the kitchen and there sitting on the table is her son sleeping in a laundry basket!

She said my grandmother told her that she did this with all 5 of her kids when they were first born. She folded a heavy blanket up, placed it in the bottom of the basket and then laid her swaddled up son in on top. She does it because it is easy to carry him from room to room when she is trying to get things done without disturbing him.

Has anyone else ever done this?

  1. I haven't ever seen this but I can imagine that my mother probably did this with me and my siblings.

  2. I've never heard of this but it sounds like a good idea. There is no harm in it.

  3. I have never done it, but the baby is only 2 weeks so I dont see any harm in it,

  4. that is weird.........

  5. Its just a cheap and easy way to make a bassinet or moses basket. He isn't going to fall out. He is only 2 weeks old. Besides she could have left him unattended in another room. I see no harm in it. I too think it is a good idea

  6. No, but how is that really different from a bassinet or a Moses basket? I wish I had thought of that!

  7. Im not a mom but my mom did this with me. I was really tiny. She said i didnt really gain much weight. I was 6 lbs. 7 oz and 19 3/4 inches long. So she always  put me in a laundry basket when she planned on moving me around. When we were just staying home she would put me in my bassinet. I think its an excellent idea to do this.

  8. Well I will say that its a but weird, but not all that bad of an idea.  Sounds safe enough as long as the little one is being watched closely.  Its a good way to move him from room to room without waking him, and keeping an eye on him.

  9. It won't hurt for a newborn.

They didn't have bouncers and swings in the old days!

  10. Nope never done it, but think its a GREAT idea!!!

  11. my son rides in the laundry basket when were doing lanudry... but thats about it. when he was little i used to make a 'nest' out of a comforter in one of our arm chairs and he would sleep in there, it was the only way he would take a decent nap.

  12. i have, when my son was tiny like that when i had him in the living room i would use a basket because i didnt want to drag the bassinet in the living room and i didnt want him to be sleeping in the bedroom.so a big blanket and a clothes basket made a perfect little bed for him. hes 9 months old now, and he loves to play in the laundry itself now lol.

  13. hahaha...yes my first son used to cry at about 5 months when i went outside to hang washing so id pop him in the basket and take him with me....it isnt hurting him so who cares!!!! whatever works best sometimes for some peace!! i also have a clam-shell my toddler uses for a swim in summer....i put a big soft balnket in it and put my baby twins in it to sleep when im outside with my toddler!!

  14. Ive never done it, but one time my fiances mother watched our son, I asked her if she wanted something for him to sleep in when he napped and she said, "nope I'll just put him in a laundry basket" My fiance said she did it to them all the time! I don't see any harm in it, maybe when they get a little bit older its not a good idea, but at that age its actually a pretty good idea!

  15. we let my daughter sleep in the laundry basket while at my mother in laws as she did not have anywhere to put her down. she was only very little at the time.

  16. i wouldn't put it on a table because of the risk of falls, but i certainly put my baby in a moses basket often enough.  a moses basket is kinda like a laundry basket.  it's safe enough as long as you are in the room and paying attention.
