Kinda a random breed question?

I have a Qh/Standardbred.Dam was a QH and Sire was a Standardbred. Both were purebred. He came from an auction so I have no idea if he is an "accident" or if his previous owner planned his birth. What I was wondering is what would be the pros/cons of mixing these two breeds.I know QH/Thoroughbreds(Appendix) are great but who ever thought of QH/Standardbred?What do you all think?

My guess would to why someone might do this:

He has an awesome temperment. It takes a lot to make him mad.-Thats the QH horse in him

He is big 16.3 possibly 17 hh.-Standardbred.(i dont know if Standardbreds are really tall??)

If you have time I would really appreciate you checking out my other question. Thanks http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkrYtzqgNH.V33F4QZ19X1fsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080827233208AAYIdeL

  1. I'll betcha somebody bred the mare just to have a "baby", which is sad, but good for you who now has the gelding.

Actually the temperment comes from BOTH breeds!  My very first horse was by a standardbred stallion out of a morab mare and a funnier conformation, you'd never want to see!  She had the heavy neck and chest of the Morgan, the head, height (16.3 also) and legs of the standard bred then you got to the FLAT, highset tail of the Arab and wondered what the heck were they thinkin'?  She could trot faster than she could run, you could fit 6 kids on her because her back was so long BUT in all the years I had her, she only kicked me once (I'd have killed me!) and that was only after she warned me twice and I didn't listen (I was up behind her with a rubber curry comb trying to clean her up for a horse show.).

She was nearly 30 when she passed away, but boy she made a lot of good impressions!

At 27 she could still travel a trail all day long and not be stiff or sore the following day.

  2. Standardbreds are very tall, that's probably where he got the height from, though QHs can reach 17+ hands. I think I've only seen a few QH/Standardbred crosses...so I can't help you with that...

  3. I think people put too much empahsis on what breed a horse is.   It doesn't matter.  You can have a QH that is just a doll, then turn around and have one from the same breeding parents that isn't.

It's much more on how the horse is treated than it is what it's make-up is.

I have two Mustangs - both captured straight off the BLM land.  My black one is a bit of a handful (however he was about 5 when captured).  My 2 year old is the sweetest, most gentle little guy.

A lot of people breed different horses for confirmation, stamina, etc.

It just depends on what you want to use the horse for.

  4. I own several standardbred and their average height is about 15.2hh. 16hh and up is considered a large horse in our world. It all depends but I believe it was an accident. Im not sure how other breeders go about doing this but standardbred breeding is very specific. Stud fees are usually about $5000. When you go to breed your mare you need to state her tattoo number and other information. Then breeding occurs and you pay the fee once she is in foal. Unless someone actually went and payed the stud fee to breed a standardbred with a quarter horse my best guess in that it was an "accident" Maybe a colt got out of the feild etc.

How can you be certain of your horses breeding? Are there papers or is it just word of mouth?

Also the "calm" temperement you speak of could also come from the standardbred side. Most of our are very level headed and intelligent although there is always exceptions to the breed.

  5. well if you want to know about why some one would mix them two breeds well

what I experienced with a Q Horse that are ruff Trotting and well a Standard bred is well a trotter

and the mix may have been for the trot

but really who knows really why it could be that is what just happend

but he sounds like a good mix

    I have Mustang/QH Apploosa, Paints ,Q Horses,Mustangs and Moabs

    and a Moab/Mustang /QH Apploosa

some times mixing the breeds help

    the breed out

    enjoy your new horse
