I just registered my child in kindergarden and was shocked to find out that not only do they go almost all day, but they start before the other grades. I know it has been awhile but when I was there they went half day, and started about 1/2 hr later then us. Her schedule is 8:30-2:00 and the rest of the school's is 8:40-2:55. And every web the school has minimal day. They get out at 2:05 then.

I was wondering how meny kids still go half day if any and how meny start earlier then the rest of the school. Thanks

  1. I teach First Grade, and at my school our Kinders go for the full day, the same as the rest of the students. I think it is actually a good thing to have them start a little bit earlier and then get out a little bit earlier. The reason is that a lot of times it is overwhelming for the little ones to be entering school, finding their classrooms every day, etc. amidst the older kids rushing by them, trampling over them, etc. Same thing at the end of the day.

The downfall is that they end up being separated and not interacting with the older kids, who a lot of times can be good influences, help them out, and other things.

Good luck to your little one!

  2. Kindergarden here is the same as the other grades at the school. School starts at 8:05 and ends at 3:05. Prek is a half day program.

  3. At the school I teach at all the grades start at 8 am.  Kinders get out at 2:07, 1-3rd grade are out at 2:27, and 4-6th grade are out at 2:47.  We have minimum days every Wednesday also, where they get out at like 12.  There are not many half-day kinders anymore, and really they need the time to teach as much as is required now.

  4. My sister goes to her school's "Daycare," which is nearby her school in the morning and then goes to her school after lunch.

  5. It will be fine.

  6. Alot of kindergardens are going full day now. I live in IL. While my daughter goes full day( from8:10 to 3:10) my niece who lives 50 miles away but also in IL went half days from 8:30 to 11:30 it was just like preschool. But my niece had homework any where between 1 to 3 pages every day while my daughter doesnt have any homework except to work on flashcards every day. In both cases they started at the same time everyone else started.

I big reason mydaughters school doesnt do half days is because we live in  a small town and there is only 17 kids in her class and there is only 1 kindergarden class in the school. My nieces school had a total of 4 kindergarten classes. ( 2 teachers each class had between 20 and 25 kids in it)

  7. I think i went to 11 till the end of the day. I was the afternoon Kindergarten. My cousin went ALL day. They lived in a different state. every school is different. They probably start earlier because they don;t want the big kids bothering/scarying them.

  8. my son his in prekinder half day 8:10-11:10 next year kinder all day 8:10-3:10

  9. My kids went to kinder from 7:45 till 3:00.  I didn't go to kinder half day and that was 25 years ago.  I think times differ in different regions.   As far as starting earlier, our school disctrict staggers the start and end times of school, so if you have to go to elementary, then middle school you can make the rounds with having to drop one off too early.  It also helps with traffic congestion.

  10. Gee, it's 8:00 to 12:30 where I live.  My state is pretty far down in the rankings (CA) and it's probably not a coincidence.

  11. My kindergartener doesn't start before the rest of the school.  They start at 9:15 and go to 3:15 (if I remember right).  They get on the bus at 8:20 and off the bus at 3:45.

  12. We have a choice of full or half day, but 99% if the kids go full day so if your little one goes half they miss out on the fun stuff (gym, music etc).

  13. Where I am my son goes from 12:20-3:05 for the afternoon Kindergarten. Next year though I guess they are changing it to all day kindergarten which will be from 8:30-3:05pm which I feel is a long time for the young ones but a lot of parents were fighting for it and won. I just wish people remembered that school is not a way for cheaper daycare it is school. But yeah thats a whole new subject lol But I am sure after getting used to it your child will love it and it helped mine finally start sleping better at night sicne he is so tired from the long day lol

  14. Were my son goes, it is a half day.  Morning class at 8:25-10:45 and afternoon 12:05-2:45.  The district that my friends son attends however is full day.  They go two days a week and what is supposed to be every other Friday (it doesn't work out that way).  If you want your child to go to school everyday, you have to pay for a public education!!!  This system just started in that district last year.

  15. IM SOOOO JEALOUS!...my daughter only goes to school half day and where i live thats the only option

  16. Depends on the school mine is in Kinder and goes from 8:30 till 3:15 and she loves it. all the others schools start at 9:am till 4:pm. Yours will be fine

  17. Where I live..there is no half day program.  The reason they change the times for Kindergartners is so they aren't lost in the shuffle with all the rest of the kids coming and going at the same time.  It's a great idea.

  18. i work at an elementary school adn the kindergardeners go from 8am-215pm nov-june and aug-nov they go 8am-1130am when i was in school we went half day i went from noon til 3pm but they changed it. this is in cali by the way if it matters. they go half day until thanksgivin day break then they go full day 2 years ago they went half day until xmas break then they went full day. i was in high school when tehy started goin full days i graduated in 2004 so it wasnt that long ago

  19. My daughters school has "early readers" and "late readers" in Kindergarten. Early goes from 8:15-12:30 Late from 10:15-2:30. That DOES seem like a long day for a little kid, I agree with you.

Older kids all day classes are 8:15 - 2:55.
