Kindle looks for a front running victory in the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes
Named as the speed of the field by trainer Gary Mandella for his trainee’s upcoming start in the Grade 3, $100,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes at Santa Anita Park, Kindle is a sharp front runner, who enjoys breaking out swiftly and look to maintain the lead to the wire.
The daughter of Indian Charlie, the bay filly is currently exiting a front wheeling victory in the Bangles and Beads Stakes at Fairplex Park going over at six and one half furlongs.
The filly broke out and quickly crossed over to take the lead rounding off the first turn. She drifted out to gain some advantage, and it continued to go in her favour in the backstretch, as she opened up a great deal of advantage against five other fillies and mares.
Under steady urging, she was well ahead swinging off the final bend, and remained well clear from the field to win the stakes race.
A similar performance is expected from Kindle in the Maddy Stakes, which is a turf sprint, and jockey Edwin Maldonaldo will have to figure out a way to take control in the early stages of the race, but his most difficult task will be to keep that control in the dying stages of the race, which is far more important while moving up in class.
“I love the setup,” trainer Gary Mandella admitted. “Some of these horses have shown speed, but if you just go on their last race, my filly is the speed of the field.”
Kindle, impressed one and all after her impressive winner in the Bangles and Beads Stakes after a seven month layoff over six and one half furlong, as she covered the entire distance in an impressive 1 minute and 17.76 seconds, and won by three lengths.
It surprised her connections after she had to flops in the month of February and March, when she finished fifth and sixth respectively, in two allowance optional claimers, both at Santa Anita Park.
“She did not have an injury, and no surgery, she was just skin and bones. We thought she could use some time off.”
