Kinetic Energy Recovery System to become more powerful in the 2014 Formula 1 season
It has been revealed that the Kinetic Energy Recovery System devices in the 2014 season are going to be much more powerful as compared to the devices that are being used in the ongoing 2011 Formula 1 season.
This was revealed soon after the officials of the sport announced that the engine regulations change is going to be delayed until the 2014 Formula 1 season at least.
This engine change according to the officials is actually the replacement of V8 engines. The V8 engines were initially supposed to be replaced by four-cylinder turbo engines in order to cut the costs of the sport drastically but the officials claim that
the sport’s quality will not be affected much.
In order to back this change, it has recently been revealed that the KERS is going to be much more powerful as well in 2014 but most of the critics believe that the device is not a part of Formula 1. People including the CEO of Formula 1 Management Bernie
Ecclestone and Ferrari’s president Luca di Montezemolo believe that these engine changes are going to take the environment of the sport away from the fans which is irreplaceable.
On the other hand, Rob White, the deputy managing director of Renault Sport F1 sided with the officials of the sport and explained the specifications of the KERS of 2014.
“It will be much more potent than KERS is now. In 2011 KERS is limited to 60kW power, using 400kJ of energy per lap. The equivalent numbers for [the new engine] are 120kW - so twice as much power - but more importantly, up to 4MJ (4,000kJ) will be available
to the driver each lap. Basically it will contribute performance ten times greater than the 2011 KERS. We've become used to the cars using 60kW for a few seconds a lap. What we're talking about is twice as much power for much, much longer,” he said.
However, the officials have now revealed that new 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged engines can now be used as a replacement for the V8 engines.
Bernie and Luca stated that the noise of a Formula 1 engine is the main reason why people come to watch the sport live and if the officials take that away from it by bringing in turbocharged engines, the quality of the sport will suffer.
