a)Ammonia reacts with hypochlorite to form hydrazine. This reaction is described by the following equation:

2 NH3 OCl- N2H4 Cl- H2O

The rate law for this reaction is k [NH3]1 [OCl-]1.

The rate constant, k = 0.01909 mol-1 L sec-1 at 35oC.

What is the overall order of this reaction, as determined from the rate law? What is the order with respect to the two reactants?

Calculate the rate of reaction when [NH3] = 0.240 M and [OCl-] = 0.156 M

Insert your answers in the boxes below (To enter a number in scientific format e.g. 1.5 x 10-3 type '1.5E-3')

Overall order of reaction =

Order of reaction with respect to NH3 = Order of reaction with respect to OCl- =

Rate of reaction (when [NH3] = 0.240 M and [OCl-] = 0.156 M) = mol L-1 sec-1

  1. rate = k [NH3]1 [OCl-]1

    Overall order of reaction = "2"

    (add up the exponents 1 +1 = 2)

    ======================================...

    Order of reaction with respect to NH3 = 1

    Order of reaction with respect to OCl- = 1

    (it is the exponent)

    ======================================...

    Rate of reaction (when [NH3] = 0.240 M and [OCl-] = 0.156 M)

    rate = k [NH3]1 [OCl-]1 ,

    rate =  0.01909 mol-1 L sec-1 [0.240] [0.156]

    rate = 7.147 mol L-1 sec-1

    your answer (3 sigfigs): 7.15 mol L-1 sec-1
