  1. think it was because he'd lost his looks, got terribly fat and was swollen with gout.

  2. Later in life, Henry was grossly overweight, with a waist measurement of 54 inches (137 cm), and possibly suffered from gout. Henry's increased size dates from a jousting accident in 1536. He suffered a thigh wound which not only prevented him from exercising, but also gradually became ulcerated and may have indirectly led to his death, which occurred on 28 January 1547 at the Palace of Whitehall. He died on what would have been his father's 90th birthday.

The well known theory that Henry suffered from syphilis was first promoted approximately 100 years after his death. Recent support for this idea has come from a greater understanding of the disease and has also led to the suggestion that his children, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, may have displayed symptoms characteristic of congenital syphilis[citation needed]. A second recent theory suggests that Henry's medical symptoms, and those of his older sister Margaret Tudor, are characteristic of untreated Type II diabetes

  3. As someone else said, there are known portraits/drawing of Henry VIII in 1542 and 1545.  He died in 1547.  What you might find is that those portraits are even more idealized and show him looking much younger than he should.  It's common with portraits of his daughter Elizabeth  - portraits of her painted less than 10 years before her death still portray her as a fairly young-looking.  Portrait painters had to make their patrons happy or they lost their jobs.

I would suggest a mix of ill health and good old fashioned vanity.

  5. Cause he was fat; v fat!

  6. I did some research on this subject - and consulted with another anglophile.  The best we can discern is that Henry VIII was suffering from the late stage of syphyllis in his later years.

Late stage syphyllis often is known as neuro syphyllis which sx include impaired judgment, erratic behavior and physical deformities.

    But, this is conjecture.

  7. I don't knoooooooo.

But Henry was really fat- and towards the end of his life he got ugly. He also had horrible legs that looked like c**p. Maybe that's why he didn't want no one takin' or makin' his pitcher. His legs was gnarly.

  8. I would imagine its because he was grossly overweight due to his bad ulcerated leg and his massive appetite, he was a very vain man and was very athletic in his youth and also very handsome but as he got older he lost it all, I think that would be the reason.

  9. I can only imagine , but for what it's worth I'll share it with you!

Henry Viii died 1547, he was not a pretty sight!

His waist measured 54" , he had an ulcerated thigh wound , he suffered from gout, and also had syphilis.

Compared to his younger years he looked just the opposite!

It would have taken a portrait painter with a great deal of imagination to make him appear presentable.

'Bonitaka' has given you a great answer, I read his web stuff and although it is not really clear about the 1545 painting, there is lots of other stuff on that site  that needs thinking about, like the engraving.

I am always suspicious  about these school tests, like do they want to know the answers to questions as they have taught you?  Or are they willing to listen to your own point of view?

In the case of your Daughter maybe it is best to toe the line , give them what they are looking for , then at a later date ask about the question as posed by 'Bonitaka'?

That answer was a good one , I learnt something!

(Your never too old to learn).

  10. Are you sure?  This website shows a portrait supposed to have been painted only two years before he died

and a sketch that may be even later.

  11. He couldn't agree on which of his wives to pose with.

  12. Mainly because during King Henry VIII of England's later in life, Henry was grossly overweight, with a waist measurement of 54 inches (137 cm), and possibly suffered from gout. Henry's increased size dates from a jousting accident in 1536. He suffered a thigh wound which not only prevented him from exercising, but also gradually became ulcerated and may have indirectly led to his death, which occurred on 28 January 1547 at the Palace of Whitehall.

He was very self-aware of his appearance and always pretended to be a young, healthy and the handsome prince that he once was. He tried to avoid anything that could make him see the reality of his "deteriorating health and appearance."
