King/ Shvedova defeat Hantuchova/ Radwanska in quarterfinal – China Open 2011
The fourth seeded team of Vania King with Yaroslava Shvedova had a seesaw affair with eighth seeded team of Daniela Hantuchova with Agnieszka Radwanska during the quarterfinal of the China Open 2011. On Thursday the 6th
of October the crews had taken to the outdoor hard courts of the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China and emerging victorious after just one hour and fifteen minutes were the American King and Kazakh Shvedova in straight sets of 6-0, 7-5.
The first round of the match was initiated by Hantuchova/ Radwanska after they had won the service toss but they got off to a bad start as they were broken in the opening game. Mean while, King/ Shvedova dominated from the very
beginning as they capitalised on an early break and then went on to winning a game on their serve.
In doing so, they not only took a mini lead of 2-0 but further extended the lead to 3-0 as they again capitalized from their second break by the end of the third game. During the last three games, the fourth seeded team did not
let their opponents win a single game and instead broke their adversaries in their remaining service games to win a bagel set victory of the opening set.
After taking a beating in the opening set, the eighth seeded duo pulled up their socks and although, they tried very hard, they were still unable to clog a set.
Opening the second round of the match was again the eighth seeded pair and this time they were able to win on their first game and as they capitalised on an early break in the second game, they were leading the set with a 2-0 mini
lead. They then avenged their loss of the first set by further extending their lead to a 3-0. In the following two games the players again held serve and the scoreboard rotated to 4-1.
Hantuchova/ Radwanska were standing at 5-1 at the end of the sixth game by breaking their opponents and were now only a game away, however, they ended up throwing a wining set as the fourth seeded team of King/ Shvedova made a
return in the seventh game. They not only won the seventh game by breaking their opponents but instead, with another break and by holding serve, they reeled off straight five games over their rivals and tied the score at 5-5 by the end of the tenth game.
At such a crucial stage in the game, King/ Shvedova held serve and the crowd expected the set to move into a tiebreak but as Hantuchova/ Radwanska double faulted in the twelfth game, they endorsed the match point to their opponents.
King/ Shvedova were able to secure a spot in the semi final where they will be facing the top seeded team of Kveta Peschke with Katarina Srebotnik.
