King/Shvedova oust Peng/Zheng to reach the doubles quarter-finals – French Open 2012
Third seeded combination of Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova earned a place in the quarter-final round of the French Open doubles category on Sunday. They ousted the unseeded Chinese combination of Shuai Peng and Jie Zheng in
the third round clash of the Grand Slam tournament in Paris, France, on Sunday.
The American-Kazakh tandem wrapped up their convincing victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to book a berth in the final-eight of the star-studded event. King and Shvedova are rated among the hot favourites for winning the doubles
title at the Roland Garros this season and their convincing performances in the initial rounds hints they are well on course to achieve glory.
The third seed duo had no troubles at all to dispose of the Chinese team in the third round. King and Shvedova kept the games short and professional, belting assertive winners regularity and cashing in most of their opportunities
in the contest to come out as the deserving winners. Shvedova’s success in the singles category this season is also memorable for her. She has reached the fourth round of the French Open and will play against the defending champion, Li Na of China, for a place
in the quarter-finals this week.
Peng and Zheng have been playing brilliantly in the tournament so far but couldn’t carry on with their winning impetus in the third round clash against the third seeded tandem. The Chinese duo posed some early resistance in the
contest against King and Shvedova but was completely outplayed in the later parts of the match to finish on the losing side in the end.
King and Shvedova served with 68 per cent precision in the contest, winning 25 out of 36 first serve points en route to victory. They converted five out of seven break opportunities in the match and secured 60 of the total 108
points being played to drive the unseeded Chinese out of the tournament comprehensively.
Up next for the American-Kazakh tandem are the seventh seeded Russian veterans, Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova, in the quarter-final round of the French Open. The Russians were successful against the 11th seed Spanish
team of Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Para Santonja in the third round.
