King of Abu Dhabi Martin Kaymer hopes to retain the title amid toughest field ever
Undisputed king of Abu Dhabi, Martin Kaymer is all set to reignite trailblazing golf at this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
His penchant for the familiar turf knows no bounds and has won the event twice in the last two years and thrice in last four.
His phenomenal record at Abu Dhabi Golf Club is probably one of the biggest threats for the rest of the field this week.
Ranked number four on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Kaymer will be stepping on the course as the defending champion and not just any other defending champion but the one who has successfully defended the title three times in the past.
Kaymer said on Wednesday, January 25, “It's the golf tournament, the whole organisation, the hotel where we are staying - when I come to the clubhouse, the people welcome me, saying welcome home; a lot of things, they make me feel very comfortable here. I'm looking forward to playing again”.
He further added, “Also, if you have not played golf or tournament golf for so long, you are motivated to play again, and you can't wait to play another round of golf, and that actually counts properly. Obviously I really like the golf course”.
The 27-year-old German is paired with two of the notable players on the European Tour, world number two Lee Westwood and grizzled Spaniard Sergio Garcia and believes the pairing will be under the radar over the weekend.
Kaymer has performed well in the previous year, although not as good as he performed in 2010 where he landed no fewer than four titles.
He won the Abu Dhabi event in January last year and closed the season with another glistening victory at WGC-HSBC Champions in November.
For the rest of the season, he played remarkably well, finishing runner up at Omega European Masters and also fared well at the Omega Mission Hills Golf World Cup where he represented Germany alongside countryman Alex Cejka.
Regardless of the fact that Kaymer knows the course like the back of his hand, this is for the first time Abu Dhabi has attracted one of the strongest fields in the history, promising thrilling start of the season on European Tour calendar.
