King of Super Series needs mental strength to become World and Olympic Champion
The most successful Men’s Singles player in the history of Malaysia, Lee Chong Wei, who is also known as ‘King of Super Series’, still lacks the mental strength that is required to become a World and Olympic Champion.
Numerous shuttlers, who have won Men’s Singles title in the World Championships and Olympic Games but are struggling hard to get at the top position in the world rankings. However, Chong Wei is enjoying that top position for the last three consecutive years
but failed to emerge as the winner in both mega events.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei have won every title in Super Series events but he fails to deliver when it comes to winning a title in World Championships and Olympic Games. He desperately needs these major titles to prove himself a complete shuttler in all aspects
of the game.
Chong Wei worked really hard to get at the current level but he is unlucky as Lin Dan from China is also playing in the similar time. The Malaysian has attained all skills to match the Chinese opponent but still lacks the finishing touch when it comes to
mental toughness and confidence.
In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Chong Wei reached in the final but failed to make his mark in the event as his opponent, Lin was perfect on the day. The Chinese thrashed the Malaysia in straight games without showing any mercy. The major reason behind the
defeat of Chong Wei was a lack of confidence as he bowed down to the mighty Chinese without any considerable fight.
In the 2011 World Championships, held in London in August, Chong Wei was the hot favourite for the Men’s singles title and he reached in the final quite easily by playing superb badminton. However, his bad luck was also there as his opponent in this crucial
match was again, Lin Dan.
The Malaysia won the opening set and lost the second one to make it a rubber-set fight. Chong Wei managed to take the match point but failed to convert his wonderful performance into victory. Lin came from behind and took the game to win the match. With
this victory, the Chinese became the World Champion for the fourth time.
Chong Wei was too close yet too far from becoming a World Champion. He failed to play with courage in the crucial points and lost the final match of the World Championships.
After losing the final of the mega event, a disappointed Chong Wei failed to win the next two events and lost to Chen Long of China. The Chinese defeated the World Number One in the final of Japan Open Super Series and Denmark Open Premier Super Series.
However, he managed to win the French Open Super Series last month.
Now, in last week’s Hong Kong Open Super Series, the Malaysian again lost to Lin Dan in the Men’s Singles semi-final and also failed to complete his goal of reaching in finals of all events in the current year.
Chong Wei needs to play with courage and put the pressure behind as he defeats all top shuttlers in Super Series events but loses to the same opponents in World Championships and Olympic Games. He needs to work extra hard on the aspect of mental strength
which will earn him what he desperately wants.
