  1. The Battle of Lyndanisse took place on June 15 1219.

Under pretext of helping the Crusade in Palestine, the Danish king Valdemar II Sejr defeated the Estonians at Lyndanisse (Estonian: Lindanise) under orders from the Pope.

With a number of longboats, the king, together with Bishop Anders Sunesen, Bishop Theoderik of Estonia, Count Albert of Nordalbingien and Vitslav I of Rügen sailed to Lyndanisse what is today known as Tallinn and took over the castle there (Castrum Danorum).

On 15 June, the Estonians attacked the Danes near the castle which came as such a surprise to the crusaders that they fled in all directions. But under Vitslav, they regrouped and drove off the Estonians.

Legend holds that during this battle, in the Danes' hour of need, the Danish flag, Dannebrog fell from the sky and gave them renewed hope. The Dannebrog remains the oldest state flag in use today.

  2. France has been around for a long time now...you could pitch france against burgundy for instance. Burgundy now is a province of france, but once it was it's mortal enemy ;).

If you want something from the early days: a Briton invasion in armorica (present day bretagne in france)

something wich has nothing to do with france: The lombards in northern italy fighting off an all-powerfull Carolingian empire.

Or how about the invasion of the Magyars from the east? (carved out a territory wich is now modern-day hungary)

Perhaps you fancy a Viking invasion in Sicily, at wich time it would be ruled by the Arabs.

A crusade? the Teutonic Order and it's Livonian conquests.

  3. You could always go with the Battle of Manzikert, the battle which resulted in the Turk settling in Anatolia. There were various interesting happenings there: Norman armies betraying the Greeks (Byzantines) and establishing a short-lived kingdom in Galatia. There were other groups of Turks betraying the Greeks and joining with the invading Turks, and other backstabbing goodness.

There is of course the Battle of Hastings, everybody knows what happened there. The Normans invaded England and killed Harold Godwinson, ending Anglo-Saxon England.

Maybe the Battle of Poiters or the Battle of Tours, in which Charles Martel saved France from the Muslims.

    Hope any of those work.

  4. england france fought all the time
