As an American, I have to say that it gives a country a sense of history and continuity.  We don't have royalty, so we try to create it out of celebrities.  I know that I probably have a rose colored view of it, but I think it's a unique cultural thing that shouldn't be lost.

To put it in a nutshell.~

They are servants to the people.  They are paid by the people and remain as kings and Queens because of the people.  

They must be doing something right, otherwise the monarchy would have been long gone history by now.

In todays world, it's almost like a circus circus.  Just look at the tabloids.

I must admit, they do tend to bring some stability to tradition and their country, despite the crazy things written about them.

The work they do, such as charities, functions etc. etc. is practically required from them.

If you you think they are fortunate, you might want to rethink again.  Would you trade your own FREEDOM for a TITLE AND MONEY?!

Tourism brings in a lot of money for London.

I usually dislike the royals and would prefer a republic, however in recent times, given the credit crunch and spiralling costs of food and oil, I have started to respect the queen...She keeps the politicians ego's in check!

Did you notice recently how politicians gave themselves a payrise.? Well somebody above them to has to keep check!

They are of immense benefit.  having a monarch as head of state rather than an elected president saves us having yet more tiresome elections, and also saves us a lot of money.  

The royal family costs every Briton 66p a year.  The italian presidency costs each Italian almost double at £1.24  As Frederich Forsythe put it in the Daily Express:
