King’s Stand sensation Equiano retired to stud
The star sprinter of the Barry Hills yard, Equiano, has made a habit of bouncing back over the past year.
But the injury he sustained after the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York last month is a setback that he wasn’t able to beat, as connections have decided to retire him to stud.
The news means he will not be able to travel to France to feature in the Prix de l'Abbaye on Arc day, where, if he was at his best, would have had a massive chance of landing the spoils.
The dual-winner of the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes, has ended his career following a hugely successful season for owner James Acheson. Although he didn’t beat a horse home in his latest run at York – obviously owing to the injury – he finished in the frame on all his five previous starts, winning three, including the £170,000 King’s Stand, where he demolished the field from the front.
The colt’s performances this season were vastly improved on his efforts last year, where he struggled to adapt to his new surroundings at the Hills’ yard following his arrival from Spanish trainer Maurico Delcher-Sanchez in 2008, who saddled the speed merchant to his first King’s Stand two seasons ago.
Equiano accumulated career earnings of more than £550,000 in win and place prize-money, and he now goes to the Newsells Stud with the tag of being one of the success stories of the 2010 season.
