Kings XI shareholders optimistic about team’s recovery – Cricket News Update
The Kings XI http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833, despite having competed in the high-profile Indian Premier League since its inception, and having come up 2nd on the points table in the inaugural edition, have disappointed their shareholders over the tournament’s progression
over the years. However, co-owner of the team, Ness Wadia, is optimistic about the team’s potential to recover from the slump in the current edition.
“We’ve made losses of approximately Rs 50-60 crore in the last four years. This year, hopefully, we will be able to break even. We are working with the IPL and the BCCI,” said Wadia, who co-owns the franchise along with Bollywood http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Di-Venuto-c1954 Preity Zinta and a
number of prominent industrialists.
The franchise, which was worth $76 million initially, boasted world-class players such as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Piyush-c82317 Chawla. However, despite the star power, Punjab was not able to bag the first
title, which eventually went to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajasthan-c837 Royals. Despite the disappointment, the fact that the franchise was able to win 10 out of 14 matches gave hope to investors.
The second edition, held in 2009, saw the title go to Deccan Chargers, while Punjab rested 5th on the table with 7 wins out of 14 matches. The next season, which saw a change in Punjab’s ranks with Sangakkara taking up captaincy instead of Yuvraj
Singh, was purely dismal for the franchise. They managed to win only 4 matches, and ended up on the bottom of the table with 8 points, as Chennai Super Kings emerged victorious.
Speaking about the disappointing trend over the years, Wadia said, “We had a good couple of years initially. The last two years were not very good. I think this year should be better, overall.”
The 4th season of the Indian Premier League saw drastic changes all over, with two new teams introduced, namely Pune http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yuvraj-Singh-c98364 moved over to Pune and Sangakkara took over Deccan Chargers, Punjab
saw a new skipper in the shape of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Gilchrist-c918.
The Australian veteran, who was able to lead the side to 7 victories last year, is currently trying to inspire the franchise in the ongoing edition of the league as well. However, as things stand right now, Punjab have only won 3 out of the 8 matches, and
are set to face the Super Kings next, on April 28.
