Kingsmill Championship: Jiyai Shin outrivals Paula Creamer in sudden death playoff
South Korean Jiyai Shin won the Kingsmill Championship after she outrivaled Paula Creamer of the United States in sudden death playoff, at Williamsburg, Virginia, on Monday.
The Kingsmill Championship, which had to be finished on Sunday, stretched into playoff after Shin and Creamer shot an overall 268 in the final round.
However, the match was then suspended due to darkness and officials told it would resume on Monday morning.
Shin and Creamer, who were determined to do their best on Sunday, could only play eight holes. On Monday, the South Korean star was lucky enough to capitalise on Creamer’s error on the ninth extra hole as the American golfer ended up registering a bogey.
Although a working day, the crowd came out in large numbers to support their favourite contenders on Monday.
Speaking to the media at the end of the nerve-racking battle that rattled both the players, Shin said that she is more than thrilled after winning the Kingsmill Championship.
She said that it was tough on the course, as she not only had to battle rough weather conditions throughout the four days, but she also had to face Creamer, who enjoyed massive crowd support at Virginia.
Shin pointed out that she was pretty tired after playing the longest match of her life as she was not prepared for it.
“First time ‑‑ my first time do some interview Monday.  It was really tough to win.  I know last night was, it take so long so I was really tired and when I came this morning, still tired,” the Kingsmill Championship winner said while speaking to LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association).
Shin admitted that standing her ground in bad weather was an uphill task, as most of the other players were also rattled by darkness in the opening round.
“Like a little wind and chilly, so much different conditions of the weather, so I just keep focused about my tempo because sometimes too much you think make more complicate,” Shin said.
The South Korean golfer went on to say that she was impressed by the crowd as spectators were very supportive and they appreciated her game despite the fact her opponent belonged to the United States.
“So I just think simple, I tried to.  And also I very impressive early morning a lot of people was there, so I really appreciate for a lot of fans are here”.
