Kingsmill Championship: Paula Creamer cards 65 to tie for third in first round
American Paula Creamer, who is seeking to end her winning drought this season, shot a superb 65 in the first round of Kingsmill Championship and tied for the third position, along with three other players.
Creamer looked stunning right from the start, as she was determined not to surrender to her nerves. She kicked off the round with plenty of confidence and made perfect strokes on most of the holes.
Swedish Maria Hjorth, Spanish Azahara Munoz and Beatriz Recari also carded a 65 each to share the position with Creamer.
Creamer, despite having made a name for herself on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour, has not been able to prove her mettle in tournaments since her last triumph at the US Women’s Open back in July 2010.
Commentators said that the 2012 season saw the American star record some amazing finishes — something that reflects she is set to end her victory drought.
Creamer could not impress her fans on the first hole on Thursday as she carded a bogey. However, she offset the impact of bogey on the next two holes by shooting a birdie and an eagle.
Although the weather conditions were perfect in the morning, the sunlight started to fade as the match progressed. The officials were forced to suspend the match later, which left several contenders waiting for their turn.
Carding a birdie on the difficult par-3 second and an eagle on the third hole helped Creamer put pressure on her rivals and boosted her position on the leaderboard.
She then parred the fourth and fifth and surprised the spectators by draining five straight birdies on the sixth, seventh eighth and ninth hole. On the back nine, the LPGA titan parred all the holes.
“The bogey on the 1st hole was ‑‑ (banging noise outside.)  That's what I felt like.  No, it was a terrible bogey.  There was no reason why it should have happened and it happened,” Creamer said.
“I kind of just told myself I'm not doing this, like I'm tired of starting off not on the right foot, and just kind of came back with a great birdie on 2 and a little pitch‑in on 3 for eagle from about 30 yards off the green from the pin, and birdied 6, 7, 8, 9”.
