Kingsmill Championship: Stacy Lewis ties for seventh position in second round
American Stacy Lewis displayed a stunning performance in the second round of Kingsmill Championship, as she fired a 65 to tie for the seventh position on the leaderboard.
Lewis stared her second round at Williamsburg, Virginia, in impressive style as her strokes were calculated and balanced on almost all the holes.
The American star is sharing the position with Maria Hjorth of Sweden, who registered a 69 on Friday. Hjorth posted a 65 in the first round, but the second round saw her make a couple of mistakes and she dipped to a lower position.
Lewis is being regarded as one of the strongest contenders for the prestigious title, but clinching a victory seems to be an uphill task, given a fearsome field.
Key players in the roster include Paula Creamer of the United States, Natalie Gulbis, Jiyai Shin, Azahara Munoz, Chella Choi, Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie, Ai Miyazato, Mika Miyazato, Brittany Lincicome, Brittany Lang, Cristie Kerr, Sandra Gal, Angela Stanford, Candie Kung, Christina Kim, Catriona Matthew and Na Yeon Choi.
Lewis did not let her nerve overcome her as she kept the pressure intact on her rivals. She opened the second round with a birdie but faltered on the second hole and ended up carding a bogey.
The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) star received plenty of appreciation after she carded two back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth, and an eagle on the seventh hole.
On the back nine, Lewis forged ahead with the same pace. She shot two straight birdies on the 10th and 11th hole.
Lewis shared her thoughts about her game at the end of the round, saying she improved her position in the second round as she could not do what she had planned to do on Thursday.
“Well, coming up yesterday I thought I played well but I just didn't score very well, kind of made some mistakes on the par 5s. So I knew I was playing well, just kind of needed to clean up the round a little bit. I played really solid,” Lewis said.
“I had so many putts go over the edge of the hole and I had a couple bad swings coming in”.
