Kingsmill Championship: Young guns likely to grab spotlight
For the first time in a long time, the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) roster is packed with up-and-coming young golfers, who are ready to make headway in their career by starting well at the coming Kingsmill Championship.
These young LPGA stars can be found at virtually every position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, as most of the veterans and experiences contenders can now be seen struggling to regain their lost charisma.
The LPGA Tour has seen some big changes in recent months. On top of the list is a massive influx of rising stars from just about every continent.
Despite the United States having been the hot spot for women’s golf for decades, countries like China and South Korea appear to have found a solid foothold.
Most of the top positions in the Women’s World Golf Rankings have been seized by Asian players.
Some of the key young names that are confirmed to tee off on September 6 at Williamsburg, Virginia, include South Korean Na Yeon Choi, Lydia Ko of New Zealand, Amy Yang, Shanshan Feng, Mika Miyazato, Jiyai Shin, Sun Ju Ahn and others.
After struggling through the years, the LPGA Tour has now been able to lure young guns, who do not like to rest on their laurels.
However, the influx of young players appears to have given experienced ones a bit of a shock as the top rankings have seen some big shifts in the recent past.
Despite the fresh invasion of new talent in the LPGA lineup, several key contenders, including current world number one Yani Tseng, Stacy Lewis of the United States, Cristie Kerr, have already earned enough points to stay on the safe side.
Lexi Thompson, who is also in the Kingsmill Championship roster, said that she is very happy to see new faces coming to the Tour.
She heaped praise on Lydia Ko, who grabbed her maiden LPGA triumph at the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012.
“I was very impressed. I've gotten to play with her a few times over in Australia and practice rounds and I know how good she is,” Thompson said of Ko. “She is a really hard worker. She was out there the week before playing the golf course every day”.
