Kingsmill Championship to see key American stars battle for title
The Kingsmill Championship is going to start this Thursday at Williamsburg, Virginia, with American and Asian rivals eyeing the title, but local fans have clearly pinned their hopes on national players.
The Kingsmill Championship roster is featuring plenty of competent American contenders who apparently have what it takes to win an LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) event.
However, it remains to be seen how the national players are going to keep their strong Asian rivals from snatching the title.
Observers said that beating Asian rivals will be an uphill task for most of the American players despite the tournament being staged on their own soil.
In the recent past, South Korean contenders have thrashed just about every player on the LPGA Tour, and this week’s Kingsmill Championship is ready to witness a relentless battle among key contenders.
There are several American contenders in the roster who qualify as the hot favourites, but the list will have to be narrowed down to a few as the Asian rivals outnumber them.
On top of the list is the world number two Stacy Lewis. Lewis currently ranks second in the Women’s World Golf Rankings and appears to have the ability to rattle most of the players in the field.
The American prodigy has not been able to shake the current world number one Yani Tseng on the points table. Nevertheless, her current performance reflects that she is set to make a major breakthrough in the coming months.
Another player who is likely to become the star performer at Virginia is Cristie Kerr. Kerr has not been able to end her victory drought, since her last triumph at the LPGA Championship back in June 2010.
However, she is the two-time winner at the Kingsmill Championship — a feat that has helped her overshadow most of the top-ranked LPGA stars in the roster.
Kerr appears to be fired up and will do all she can to defend her title, but she is also aware of the LPGA competitions getting more and more intense by the day.
“I mean, really all you can say about that is that there's a lot of talent out here. It's getting harder to win every year,” the American star said during her pre-tournament interview with the LPGA Tour.
