  2. I was about twelve when my mentor's son's horse got out.  She was standing there calmly munching on some grass so I grabbed a halter and approached her just like you're supposed to and just like I'd done ito her thousands of times before.  Quick as lightening she spun on the spot and lashed out with both hind feet--with new shoes on.  As I tried to turn and get out range, she clipped my side directly over my hip bone.  After a few moments, I was able to stand so I approached her again, very cautiously this time and she stood there docile as could be and let me halter her and put her back. I could hardly walk for like a week.

I know I didn't startle her or do anything wrong and I've never been able to explain what happened.  She'd never done it before and hasn't done it since.

  3. Ouch! sounds like it hurt.

A girl at my barn was going to catch her horse, while she was in the field a horse ran by (I guess it had nose flies) and knocked her down, turns out she hit her eye on the side of a rock and had to get stitches- right before the pony club championships!

Anyways, it turns out it was my horse that did that to her- I was kind of shocked because usually he is pretty calm and doesn't run around the field too much. But anyways, I guess the moral here is never underestimate horses and never think that nothing can happen to you!

  4. Ouch! That'll teach you lol!

My most "inconvenient" accident happened last year. I had bathed and groomed my grey so that he sparkled, plaited and rugged him up, then gone and gotten changed into my cream breeches and white shirt with stock. I pulled a pair of tracksuit bottoms and an old T shirt on to keep me clean. So, I'm boxing Stevie (one of my horses) into my trailer and the front bit (the window thing above the front ramp) is open (we leave the trailer stood like this when empty so air circulates. Anyway, Stevie sticks his head out and he's looking round while I'm tying him up. Here's the fun bit....he spooks and snatches his head back through the gap....you guessed it, straight into my face! Anyway, one of my teeth goes through my lip (almost ALL the way through!) and it's POURING with blood! So I'm spitting blood all over the trailer and my mam nearly has heart failure lol and so does one of the other liveries. We managed to stop the bleeding and I set off to my dressage show. When I got there it took me 20mins to wash the blood off Stevie's head, neck and shoulder (my blood, not his) and I end up doing my dressage tests with a HUGE fat lip. Then when we got home it took almost an hour to pressure wash the dried blood from inside the trailer.

I still have the scar on the inside of my lip, and now I never box with that front bit open!!

ADD: Ooh I've thought of some more.

I used to work at a riding school where the ponies were tied in an old cow byre. Anyway, I was tacking up a pony called Jazz and I couldn't get his noseband to fasten (the pin wouldn't go in the hole) and the light is a bit dim so I bent down close to his face to see. The pony next to him leaned over the half-partition and bit him, causing him to pull his head away sharply. He wore a full cheek snaffle at the time and I got the metal bars across my face! I thought my nose had fallen off lol. I had a massive nose bleed that didn't stop for about 20 mins lol. I also had 2 black eyes and a busted lip!

Another one - bit of potential horror story, involving the same pony that I mentioned in the above story (Jazz). I was about 10 or 11 and was helping out at the riding school. This pony was kept in a sectioned off area of a barn with a cow and calf, anyway me and my friend Amy (who was about 13) had gone to get him when the cow charged at us and knocked us over. I had hold of the gate and had to let go as I fell. Jazz spooked and bolted out the gate and got out of the "horsie" bit of the farm. He ran around the back where the corn is processed and fell down the corn shaft. This shaft is 8ft deep, with a hole at the bottom and extremely steep sides. Needless to say, he couldn't get himself out but was obviously panicking and rearing trying to get out. My friend and I grabbed a rope that was on the floor and Amy slid down the shaft and looped the rope through his headcollar while I supported her weight (the sides were so steep she just slipped down them so we'd tied the rope round her waist). I pulled her out and together we pulled and pulled to try and get the pony out. We were shouting for help but it was 7.30am and there was no one around. Fortunately a man had come to drop his son off  to see to his pony and he heard us and came running down. He helped us pull the pony out who by this point had torn his knees and muzzle trying to get out. He was shaking with shock so we took him into the yard and hosed his wounds and went to get the farmer who called the vet. The vet said it was lucky we were there because the pony was lucky to be alive and was relatively unscathed - his wounds were just flesh wounds so no underlying structures were damaged.

Want to know what the farmer's daughter, who runs the riding school said? "The pony shouldn't have got out in the first place."

No "My god, thanks for saving the life of my pony" or anything like that!!!! That's gratitude for you!!

  5. My horse hates having his feet picked out, and he's only just 3 so he's not very sure how to pick his feet up. I know it sounds stupid but he knows I want him to pick his feet up, but once they're up he doesn't understand he just has to hold them there.

The other day I asked him to pick his back foot up and he did, right up to his belly! He then kicked out (but it wasn't supposed to be a kick, he was just stretching his leg out.) but he got the hoof pick in my other hand and sent it flying out the stable and down the corridor.

I thought it was funny and cute because it was just like he was saying "I've had enough, stop picking my feet out!" And his aim was so spot on I'm sure he knew what he was doing.

  6. In 34 years with horses, I've been lucky to not have too many kick stories.  I've been kicked by my mare twice in the 12 years I've owned her.  Both times, her target was another horse and I was in the way.  To me she's incredibly sweet and protective, but can be bossy to other horses.

The first was about 10 years ago when i loaded her up in a trailer with an unfamiliar gelding.  She was in first, then the gelding was led in.  I was standing behind my mare ready to hook up the gelding's butt bar, when he introduced himself and she did the typical mare squeal and kick and I was right behind her.  I still have a small dent in the muscle of my thigh from that one.  Lesson learned about where to stand when loading that second horse!

The second time was almost a year ago.  I went out to feed them in the morning and had to walk past the horses to get to the barn as usual.  I said hi to the mare, then went over about 30 feet to the pony.  Next thing I know she has come over, wheeled around and tried to kick the pony.  Instead she got me in the back of the hand and my cheekbone.  It was 5 am, I had just rolled out of bed and was still half asleep.  At first I thought both my hand and cheekbone might be broken but then I thought it was only my hand, which was exceedingly painful.  I actually went to the emergency room for the first time in 33 years with horses.  It turned out neither place was broken.

  7. One day I went swimming. When we cam out I locked for my locker and undid it. The key would not turn. Nobody would help me out not either my friend of whom I was with. She made me walk to reception to report what had happened. I told the receptionist and anther lady I know was there. She asked who I was with and I said Christian. The reptionist gave me a towel stright away to rap myself up in. This other lady who know both of us told Christaina of. I got my things out of the locker with the swimmings staffs help.  The next day at school she told everyone. I was not frineds with her aftha that.

  8. years ago i worked at a barn inorder to get riding time and lots happened here are a few

they had this horrid little shetland that would sneak up and bit my behind every time i was not looking. he also was inpossiable to catch in the field he would first run away then suddenly charge...and not stop!

i got run over alot that year!

they also had a thoughbreed stallion who was always polite..til i went to clean his stall the first time i had my cycle while working there

he attacked bit me and kicked me through the wooden door to his stall

i spend a day in the er and gained lots of respect for horses

  9. Well my neighbor was giving his horse a shot because he stepped on a nail and they had to give him shots for like 2 weeks. Well his horse decided that he didn't like the shots and kicked him with both hind feet right where it hurts. It took him like 3 weeks to totally heal.
